It's not the expense, time, risk or pain that was the problem.
It's that I can't bear children.
That's a bit ironic, since the scar I have from when "anomalous tissue"
was removed when I was 20 looks for all
the world like the result of a C-section, from breastbone to below the
navel.. Anyway, there is no chance it would
ever have been functional, the female reproductive system is far more
complex than the male one, and everything
has to be *exactly* right, not just approximately. Assuming it wasn't
merely cancerous, it was at best vestigial. The
records were lost a long time ago anyway, as often happens.
My only chance of being a parent was to be a father, and due to my
condition, the odds of even that were remote.
But Medical Science saved the day. My son was worth the 35-odd years of
increasing discomfort, and had I not
been rendered sterile by the natural change, I might not have opted for
genital reconstruction. At least, until we'd
had another child.
No, the best thing about the Betan change is not that it is cheaper or
faster. It's that it's fully functional.
Of course, the fact that the love of my life is another woman means that
there were distinct advantages to having
testes, even partially functional ones. So maybe things were for the
best, anyway. My son would not exist otherwise.
Thanks for thinking of me. One thing though - the sheer relief of having
the right body is indescribable. I have my son.
So all in all, I have no complaints!
Zoe
