>But I have a question: do you all identify only, or most, with >protaganists who are the same gender as yourself? People talk a lot >about providing boys with books about boys, and girls with books >about girls, but it seems to me that I always had no trouble >identifying with the main character, whoever he or she was, and still >do. I mean, I love Miles, I want to have his baby, but when I'm >reading Memory or whatever I _am_ Miles.
I don't think I've ever had issues with the gender of a protagonist. It's kind of mind boggling to me to think of books in terms of "boy books" and "girl books," except in obvious circumstances (like the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys series. It's almost like they drew a line on the floor: mysteries for girls <---, mysteries for boys ---> I suppose I should go back and read one or two, just to see if they were as girl unfriendly as I presumed they were. )
