I noticed right off, and found it quite annoying and distracting.  Not so much because she didn't
say, but because I couldn't figure out why she didn't say.  I was left with a sort of double-image
of the character as male/female that got in the way of my reading of the story.  (And if the
character had been identified as intersexed that would have been all right, too.)
