I find the whole series to be that way (except for _Mirror Dance_). 
However, the only place where I came to a complete and grinding halt in my 
first read of the series was in _Cetaganda_.  It had something to do with 
some climbing roses and an oddly-fruited tree.  I had pretty much the same 
reaction to both that Ivan did, and didn't pick the book or the series back 
up for about a month.

I do like _Cetaganda_ now.  I just like some of the other books better.
