Sue,

Sympathy!

As a many-year manufacturer's tech support / customer service person for
laptop computers, I'll predict you won't be successful in persuading them to
replace it for free. But give them a try, anyway.

It does come under "abuse" to break the screen. They just don't break on
their own.

The tech might even look at the screen through a loop and see surface damage
at the break site, confirming the "abuse."

Please don't get too angry at them. It really is abuse to put it in a
handbag without a very rigid something on the screen/control side as a
screen protector. (Ditto for laptops in cases or suitcases with other
stuff.) I wish you hadn't encounterd this the hard way.

I've had my previous generation Nano a year and I do worry about it. I have
the Belkin Sports Sleeve, a rubbery surface sleeve that keeps it from
slipping out of my pocket. Normally, I keep it in my shirt pocket with the
screen to my chest. When listening, I'll turn it so the front is facing out
and I can push the start/pause button without taking it out of my pocket.

Suggestions to everyone: Either treat them VERY carefully or get the "all
hazards" replacement insurance that stores try to sell you at checkout when
you buy it. Read the description carefully to make sure it covers this kind
of damage.

These insurance policies are a big profit center for the stores and
insurance companies since they get a LOT more money coming in for premiums
than they pay out for replacement items. It's smarter for us, as buyers, to
take good care of our stuff and "self insure" our products (meaning buy a
new one if we get unlucky). We'll spend less money "self insuring" than
buying the store's insurance policy as long as you can (however painfully)
AFFORD to replace or repair the item if needed.

By the way, my 1GB Nano holds a full audio book as well as a bunch of hours
of music. I'm almost hoping my 1GB Nano will turn toes-up so I can replace
it with a new 8GB Nano which will hold books and ALL my music. (Besides, I'm
an electronic gadget freak.)
