Given that it's a Regency Romance, how aware were they in those days that there was an X% chance that mumps caused sterility in the adult male?
(Of course, I could segue neatly into the Dick Francis thread and mention the syphilitic sterility in Bonecrack) Given the amount of VD around in Regency England, I would think that mumps was less feared than the pox. Remember Keats and the mercury pills.
