I have similar problems.  The frustrating thing is that Cecilia Holland consistently writes about
exactly the historical periods and people that most interest me - Norman Italy, Outremer, Federigo
Secundo. And sadly, her style is so unprepossessing that regardless of the content of her stories,
they just aren't very enjoyable.  I can remember enjoying individual scenes in her novels very
much - Frederick in "Antichrist" at the helm of the ship while high on hashish, for example - but
it's only individual scenes.  No, I really don't like her style.  I'm happy when, as with
"Floating Worlds", she writes about things I don't care about so I don't feel compelled to try to
read.
