Judging from personal experience with saving Supernatural,
Veronica Mars (though it finally died) and a few other shows, I'd
say you won't get the necessary momentum you need to keep a show
like this on despite initial ratings unless you have an active
fanfiction community. Slash writers in particular will go the
extra mile to save their favourites. If you have letter-writing
campaigns on message boards and LiveJournal type sites, your show
is more likely to do well.
To the best of my knowledge, either Dresden Files didn't much
appeal to slashers, or the slashers who liked it were not on my
friends-list. I am sorry to hear that it's being cancelled--it
didn't do much for me, but I knew a lot of folks who liked it,
they just didn't write it or write about it.
I am not sure why I didn't care for it, but I remember thinking
that Supernatural, in which fandom I am extremely active, was a
better, darker, more believable (for me) show that was dealing
with most of the same themes.
Heroes has done very well and now you can see shows that are
trying to copy some of those elements. As long as Adrian Pasdar
and Masi Oka are on that show, I'll keep watching.
(I have never forgiven Fox for cancelling Profit. Nor will I.
But it was a show that shocked and horrified many people, and
only a few people "got" it.)
