For SF / Romance crossover with VERY capable female characters, you might
find you enjoy Sharon Lee & Steve Miller's books.
"Pilot's Choice" combines two novellas, each about a couple meeting. Both
members of each couple are high-class, very capable people.
"Partners In Necessity" is an omnibus book with three full novels:
"Conflicts of Honors," "Agent of Change," and "Carpe Diem."
I would never be caught dead reading "romance" books but I certainly did
enjoy these.
Lee and Miller's books can be bought through Amazon.com or direct from the
authors at:

So far, I've bought almost every book they've written. (Sharon Lee has
written a couple of non-SF mysteries that I haven't bought though the
excerpt of one I read almost pulled the money out of my pocket (and may
yet).) I've enjoyed all of their books quite a lot.
Anne McCaffrey wrote, in her introduction to "Partners In Necessity," " . .
. I don't have many books in the 'comfort' category. And I don't know why
this trilogy is so satisfying to reread, it just is! . . ." And she makes a
lot more complimentary comments about the books.
Lee and Miller aren't well known. I think many of you might like them.
