I have often dreamed up various futuristic weapons; one such was a 
"blaster" of sorts like one sees in movies (Star Wars, forex), where the 
weapon fires a laser-like bolt, but the thing puts out a firearm-like 
muzzle flash.  The explanation I came up with is that the thing is 
powered by some kind of fuel, chemical-based, that either emits a flash 
from spent fuel, or possibly is emitting some kind of coolant.

As for the blood, the durn thing is just messy.   A laser could cause an 
ejection of burnt meat exploding, if at the right combination of power 
level and bad luck.  Then the victim might bleed from arterial flow, if 
hit in a particularly unlucky spot, like the carotid.
