it was a good book.  it had a nice mystery.  i enjoyed a look at the 
culture: 'so sophisticated, we need a ritual to tie our shoelaces'; rice 
dishes with each grain arranged - i've made fruit dishes with each slice 
arranged, and by brain broke at the rice grains; the amateur chemist who 
bashfully hopes the haut will like his perfume...

i liked the outsider view: miles is running around doing work; town clown 
ivan is running around getting laid; clearly ivan is in charge ;)

so, a good book.  not, however, OMG FABULOUS run and get all the auther's 
other books right now!  if it was the first bujold book i'd ever read, its 
even odds if i'd read the rest of the series.
