  There was the curious system in Japan for a while of 'retired emperors' where an emperor would retire and allow his son to succeed while retaining most of the actual power.  The Wikipedia description of the 'Insei system' at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloistered_rule gives one account of this.
