[LMB] Has anyone finished reading Passage?

I'm new to the list so I hope it's okay to jump in here.  I was wondering if anyone else had finished Passage and was surprised as I was at one of the scenes.

Fawn bakes Dag a surprise birthday cake and tells him about the tradition of lighting candles and then blowing them out to make a wish.  It seems a very modern-era USA-type celebration, which made me wonder if the Sharing Knife setting not only resembled the Ohio Valley, but actually is supposed to be a future version of Ohio.
 
Or maybe LMB was just setting up a joke (the scene did make me laugh).
