I really enjoyed the first two books in this series by Maria Snyder:
_Poison Study_, and _Magic Study_. The author has produced some engaging
characters in a non-standard fantasy world. I thought there were a number
of places where a copy-editor really would have been of assistance
(unnecessary sentence fragments bug me), and I had some concerns about the
shape of one of the relationships in the story, but the sheer readability
of the books outweighed those -- and they're definitely problems that a
writer can grow out of.

"I propose a new standard by which to judge mainstream literature. The
more often a fantasy reader thinks, 'Oh, just forget all that and go save
the world, will you?' the lower the quality of the book." -- Janni Lee Simner
