Actually preparing a clay body for use is a fairly annoying and ardurous 
proceedure involving overhydrating it into a sludge, making sure that 
everything that isnt clay is removed, redried out and slabbed until all 
the air bubbles are out. You probably didnt get everything out so the 
texture suffered. Glazing is also a pain in the rump because unless you 
have a ball mill, or a basalt mortar and pestle that can powder the 
minerals used in glazing, the results will be very uneven and salt 
glazing is not what most people think of as a good glaze.

Why yes, I taught a master class on bronze age potting and how to do it 
from digging it up to eating off it for the SCA one summer=)
