I think it depends what sort of quality you get and what extras you have - I
was under the impression that I'd be able to buy one for NZ$100 or under.
Not that I actually need one (my flatmate has one) but we do need a TV that
we can plug the DVD player into.  Our current one is too old for the
connections - I'm not even sure it takes video.

On a completely unrelated note - I've been told that dried pennyroyal is
good to sprinkle on your carpet for about a week or so in case of fleas.
This being summer and flea season and us with two cats and having seen fleas
recently, would anyone know where to get some in New Zealand?  Our local
organic vegetable store (they have a wide range of dried herbs and spices)
was no help.

The chemical anti-flea stuff from the vet was very expensive, so if anyone
has a different and cheaper remedy, I would be interesting in hearing it.
