Mine is a Phillips DVP5982. Making it region-free required 
pushing some buttons on the remote control with the drawer open. 
I'm not sure whether it qualifies as inexpensive though. I think 
it cost me about $60. It has thus far done fine with everything 
I've thrown at it, including PAL disks, except rewritable DVDs 
written with a packet writer. It doesn't like those at all. 
(Rewritable disks written with Nero are fine though.) It even 
plays disks that some other players won't even see at all.
