We have a Pioneer DV 383 that was less than $100. It plays all regions,
all DVDs (also photos, music, etc.) on all TVs (PAL, NTSC) at all
voltages, including weird Russian videos.
Not many whistles and bells but nice and reliable. The motor broke last
week and we had it fixed in a couple of hours - cost about $30 and all
is well. (Got it fixed in Armenia, too. Extra bonus points.) Before
that we had a Daewoo which was also good but it broke after a year or
two. This one, we've had for two years now, it survived being doused in
water (broken pipe in the bathroom above it), weird voltage spikes
(Armenia, again), rough handling by three little boys, and an
international move via Moscow. That's about as good as it gets. :-)
Hope this helped.
