As for hydroelectricity, here in the Pacific Northwest there's a lot of 
brouhaha about dams endangering already endangered salmon runs and the 
animals that feed off those salmon runs (including orcas).  AAMOF, two dams 
on the Olympic Peninsula are scheduled for demolition (they may still be 
arguing about it -- this discussion has been ongoing for years) for that 
reason.

Dams can be highly environmentally destructive.  Look at Three Rivers Gorge 
in China.  For that matter look at Hetch Hetchy in Yosemite National Park in 
California.
