The thing I wonder is, why isn't more being done to bring more
hydroelectric on line in the U.S.? Talk about a proven system, and
green as all get-out. Geography? Politics? Does anyone know why this
isn't being more promoted?

Hydroelectric systems are often blocked by, shall we say, certain pressure
groups. There certainly could be much more use of small scale hydroelectric
systems (thinking of the Silvy Vale), but all bodies of water (down to
puddles and dry washes (arroyos) are regulated. If I had a stream entirely
on my own land, I still couldn't dam it and put in a generator. There have
been petitions to blow up some dams in the western US so that the rivers can
be free. Nuclear power is cheaper in Europe due to less intense regulation
and lawsuits. If we were truly running out of oil, we wouldn't leave so much
of it in the ground.
