in this case, a 'former' friend would be someone who moved away, or with 
whom you gradually lost touch but still remember fondly.
an 'ex' friend would be someone with whom the frindship ended with major 
fights and people running screaming into the night.
does that help explain the difference?

ziviya, mildly entertained at the way in which language only seems to be teh 
same thing.
