It was a pretty quiet birthday. I had to go in to work to clear up some 
questions from students; after I got back, I opened my presents, which 
were delightful. (I got: a pair of fuzzy slippers in the form of donkeys, 
which I will assuredly wear on Election Day; Tom Holland's _Persian 
Fire_; a nice shirt; and... an Edward Gorey wall calendar. The pictures 
on the calendar make up his "The Other Statue: A Murder Mystery", 
and I am going to allow the story to develop at its own pace, rather than 
flipping through the whole thing at once.

(I also treated myself to a trip to the new Borders which has opened 
nearby; I spent $185 on books and CDs, just to get the new year off to 
the right kind of start.)
