I think it is mostly an old wives' tale.  However, there are a few 
gotchas with honey.  Don't dilute it with anything; it will be prone to 
fermentation.  Also, don't feed it to very young children--it's a choke 
hazard.  And don't use it in a hummingbird feeder--it is toxic to them. 
  Honey contains a little saccharine, the "artificial" sweetener (one 
reason it is so sweet), and it is not good for the little birds.
