Not so much risky as possibly hard to handle for a novice. I've dual-booted, myself, but the bootloaders can be tricky.

I've tried Red Hat, but the differences from Windows were offputting. I prefer the Debian distros, like Ubuntu, Kubuntu and my favourite Xandros. 

Linux user forums tend to the snarky, especially where newbies are concerned, I'm afraid ... one of the reasons I stick with Xandros is that forums.xandros.com is a very friendly place.
