I like Georgette Heyer and Dorothy Sayers, but as for pleasurable reading
and depth, I think Lois has both of them beat hands down. I loathe the
Bronte Sisters. Or at least I did in high school, and although I've been
tempted to re-read Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, there always seems to be
something better on hand to read. Like the back of cereal boxes.

Jane Austen is the only one I dither on. Austen has a lovely, elegant sense
of humor and understatement. And her depictions of longing . . . oh! Swoon!
Lois also has an elegant sense of humor and understatement, too, but I think
Austen has the edge on her.

OTOH, Jane Austen never had sex-changed counts and genetically engineered
butterbugs! So I have to say Austen and Bujold are neck-in-neck in my mental
literary horse race.

Also, Lois has a lot more books in the running. I hope we won't have to wait
200 years for a BBC or Ivory and Merchant version of A Civil Campaign.
