The funny thing is, I don't like Heyer (I tried, honestly), I find Sayers's
style unappealing (I like Lord Peter and Harriet, I just don't like how
Sayers tells the stories), and I was spoiled for both the Brontes and Austen
in college -- it's hard to enjoy the emotions in the middle of language and
symbolism and theme dissections.
So I don't know how to make the comparison. Lois's writing is so
transparent compared to all of them, that it affects how sympathetically and
realistically the characters come across to me. So I don't think I can or
want to separate the technical from the emotional. I just like the way she
writes as well as her people, whereas I tend to just like the people of the
four dedicatees (is that a word?), not the writing itself as much.
