Gmail now has both POP and IMAP email available on your free gmail
account. Much easier than getting a domain for a new email address :) I
have about 6 gmail accounts for different purposes.
I also heavily filter my emails - every email list, every work interest
and every friend has their own filter, sending each email to its own
folder. With an active list like this one I can display the emails
grouped by subject line and then read each thread uninterrupted :)
Gmail & Thunderbird are my friends :)
