Chen Yen comments on the "lightweight" character of the new series. It lacks novelty (Lakewalkers/Farmers = Rangers/Hobbits) and the romance and associated romantic obstacles (like the unwanted pregnancy) were too easily resolved.
He concludes that the whole thing had a very YA (aka "Junior Novel") feel to it, especially since Fawn is "Also, Fawn is a very typical YA-type heroine, young, lively, innocent, smart, misunderstood and underappreciated."
And if I, like Rachel, had simply agreed with all of the above, the ABSTRACT of Chen Yen's comments would've concluded with "a very YA feel to it" Since, on the contrary, teen novels nowadays are often fairly complex, often focussing on the grimmer, impossible-to-resolve issues of life almost to the eclusion of real hope, love and happiness, I disagree with the "YA feel"
But it did rather remind me of some of the earlier teen series romances (like Sweet Valley High) albeit with a more entertaining setting than high school.
And that, is a rather more critical post than I ever intended to make (tastes vary, and plenty of people enjoy both the Lakewalker stories and teen series romances: go them!)
But I wanted to show that it's not top posting, and quote snipping and the rules that matter, but the attitude behind them. One takes the trouble to write clearly on this list (or at any rate, as well as one can) without all the glurge and laziness that infect every other list (with the possible exception of the Heyer List) I've ever been on.
'tchau!
