Hmm...those certainly do sound interesting! I'll put them on my
"to look for" list. Thanks!
Me: I also tried Heyer because of LMB, but didn't like what I
read very much.
Alayne: What didn't appeal to you: the setting, the characters,
the style, the vocabulary, the assumptions?

My reply: Well...I can't rightly remember now. It's been many
years since I read it. I'm not sure if I actively didn't like
it, or if it just didn't do much for me. Perhaps I'll try one
of the others you listed and see what happens. ;)
Alayne on my "yuck" reaction to Austen and Bronte: That's a VERY
strong reaction for books that are not inherently bad. I'm
curious: what turned you off so dramatically? Did you hate the
style (which is quite different between Austen and Bronte BTW)?
Were you bored by the milieu? Do you just not like novels set in
the 19th century? Did the assumption of privilege bother you?
Were you traumatized by Dickens in school at too young an age?
Enquiring minds would love to know.
My reply: I think "bored by the milieu" pretty much covers it.
I found reading them to be highly tedious and not at all
redeeming. I've even tried watching movies made of the books
(usually the BBC versions), and I generally find myself
wandering off to do more exciting things...you know, like doing
the dishes, cleaning up the living room.... *g*
Then again, I *was* traumatized by Dickens in school at too
young an age. Really, no one should have to read _David
Copperfield_ in the 4th grade, I don't care how leet her reading
skillz are! So perhaps that explains everything!!
And thanks much for the info on the second Sayers/Paton Walsh
book! How in the world I didn't know of its existence....
Cheers,
Amy ~ apparently now a poster again and not just a lurker - for
which I will also blame Tora! *g*
