It's a bit funny you should compare Miles to an Australian Cattle Dog,
my sister owns one, and she is quite lazy (the dog). She perhaps isn't
in an ideal setting for such a dog, living in a city with only the back
yard for her territory. She does have some virtues. She is very loyal
and protective, she stays alert to strangers, she obeys her superior (my
sister) very well, and she gets very excited to see me. :)
I guess these facts are neither here nor there, and have nothing to do
with Miles, but somehow I felt the need to give a counter-example to the
exemplar type Hilary describes.
I must agree about Miles being a working-dog type. I saw him as a
Border Collie. Not the largest breed, but a very smart dog with a lot
of energy and a tendency to herd whatever is around. If there aren't
any cows or sheep to herd, they will find *something*. Geese, rabbits,
even cats.
