[LMB] slightly OT: the term swap out

Jim, thank you for explaining about 'swap out'.  I now feel a little more confused by the phrase
than ever - could you maybe explain by using an example in a sentence?  Since the word was used in
the book in a pre-industrial context, swapping out a video card doesn't quite give me the sense of
its meaning. 

How identical does the object have to be?  If I exchange the pearl necklace I'm wearing for a gold
locket, am I swapping it out?
