Pete said: They have survived since 1931, although the highway signs didn't
start going out until 1936. They survived by offering free ice water to
thirsty travelers, which was important in the un-air conditioned days of the
Depression, to draw them into the store.

I can see how they survived Back Then. I don't think they could do it today,
what with radiators being better built, and bottled water being quite
common. We *drank* some of that water -- our poor modern sensibilities were
repulsed. I suppose if we had been really thirsty, it would have been better
than sweet rain from heaven. However, I thought I detected a definite whiff
of the other place . . . .

When we went up to the Black Hills, we went through Ogallala, and up past
Chimney Rock. Coming back, we went through Wall, but I thought the route was
less interesting. The Badlands were amazing, but I got bored after a bit.
The other route had animals, and switchbacks and all sorts of fun stuff! Of
course, if I had been driving, I probably would have appreciated the
Badlands/Wall route more.
