I've made the I-90 trip from Ohio to Washington state and back on several
occasions, and I had no idea how beautiful South Dakota could be (I'd always
figured all the lovely scenery in Dances With Wolves had to have been a fake
<g>) until I made a three-month cross-country trip nine years ago and
avoided the interstates as much as I could. If you get off the interstate,
South Dakota is gorgeous. I can personally vouch for the state highway
34/US highway 14 route that roughly divides the state in half from east to
west. It was like driving down the spine of some great sleeping grassy
animal. I kept expecting it to rise up and throw me off. The Missouri
River bluffs were spectacular, too.
