What system version?

Are you using Mac Mail or Eudora or Thunderbird or ...?

If you are using Mac Mail and Mac OS X 10.5 (Tiger) I suggest  
selecting the folder and then choosing Mailbox:Archive Mailbox... to  
export the mailbox to a single .mbox file. Then reimport it with a  
different name. Confirm that the newly imported folder is working and  
delete the old problematic folder.
