I've not found usenet to have as easy-to-find information as the web.

I did find a serious photo equipment forum that gave some good advice, but
even that had a horrible what-I-want to NOT-what-I-want ratio.

There seems to be a huge percentage of usenet forums that are abandoned and
have no traffic.

Google, though, has been amazingly useful. Using the right search words is
the key. I try to use multiple words, well chosen to get the specific
information I crave. It's rare that the information I want doesn't show up
on the first page and the relevance of information on subsequent pages goes
way down.

Perhaps a lot of the best usenet contributors have gone to making web pages
for their information.

My former ISP (our regional cable company) had a usenet address I found in
their website. Since they've been bought by COMCAST, I haven't tried to use
usenet so haven't looked into their usenet address. You can browse your
ISP's website to see how they support usenet, or use one of the independent
usenet sites like the others suggested. I used the Thunderbird e-mail
program for my usenet reading.
