Let me ask:  if you own up to an oopsie, do you object to a pencilled 
correction in the book with the notation "per LMB 05/02/08" in the 
margin?  That's what I did with P. 305, anyway.  I don't think I would 
correct the accidental plural (the meaning is obvious, even if the 
number of hands is incorrect).

The proofreader's mark for "delete this letter" is a slanted line 
through the offending letter, sometimes with a little curlicue off the 
top.  For a phrase or word (such as "Beargrass", ferex), a horizontal 
line through it going up in a like curlicue at the end.
