For web browsers, Google has a pretty good browser once you get past  
the top page. See the following for example.

There are several good news readers out there. MT-Newswatcher is the  
Macintosh application I've used. Filtering is your friend.

My wife used to be very active on RASFF (rec.arts.sf.fandom), though a  
lot of the core group from that newsgroup have moved over to the  
discussion forums on Making Light.
