[LMB] Chalion-esque books?

I think books by Judith Tarr may fit your bill.  May I recommend the early ones:    "The Hound and the Falcon" series, and the "Alamut" series.  There are others set in Egypt that I liked, but I can't remember titles.

Another author you may like is Susan Shwartz; may I recommend her 1991 novel _The Grail of Hearts_?
