I've seen (on video) a gull swallow three rather large hot dogs whole, 
without chewing (er, um, "beaking") them first.  And it held two of them 
down.  (The third came back up, still whole.)

As you say, gulls are a bit like snakes, and have been alleged to 
swallow all manner of improbable things.  Like glass floats from fishing 
nets, or old doorknobs (egg-like things?).  But I haven't witnessed this.
