I read (I think) THE FOUR-STORY MISTAKE years ago, forgot author, title and
most of the relevant details and could never describe it well enough for
anyone else to identify it for me.

Fantastic!  I shall go to the library either tomorrow or Monday depending on
timing and get them out.
