Kirsten, I'm an OpenOffice.org partisan; among its virtues is the "export to PDF" button. Any time I want to make one, that's what I use. Compose the document in OO, including any pictures, and export to PDF. I've no idea whether or not Microsoft Office or WordPervect will do as much, I've never used them.

And the only thing I've got unlooked for with an open-source download is that silly sense of independence from Redmond.
