Elizabeth, have you ever tried Cecelia Holland? Just my opinion, but her stuff is amazing; she writes rather like CJ Cherryh. Find a copy of THE EARL or UNTIL THE SUN FALLS or TWO RAVENS. And for a character study of a historical protagonist, ANTICHRIST is Frederick II.
