Well... the, er, crap tends to be highly diluted by other waste water,
and home sewage pipes generally don't have stuff going down them
unless stuff is actively being sent down. Plus, London's was designed
as a combined sewer/storm drain system. Normal sewage flow is low (as
seen), but they've got to have a lot of capacity for stormwater when
it rains (which also sort of flushes the system out a bit).
That's how I understand it, anyway.
