Commissioned ships of the US Navy are prefixed as USS.  Non commissioned ships owned by the US Navy (crewed by civilians) are prefixed as USNS (United States Naval Ship).  US Coast Guard ships are prefixed as USCGC (United States Coast Guard Cutter).
