Is that really so rare in the US now that it's worthy of mention? Are
things worse than I thought?
I've lived in various and sundry places from Ohio to California to
Washington state in the last 30 years, *and* drove cross-country 12 years
ago doing the Blue Highways thing (book by William Least Heat Moon, who
stayed off interstates and avoided chain restaurants, among many other
things), and non-chain food is alive and well in the U.S., IMHO.
still salivating over thoughts of the wild rice soup in Minnesota, the
pasties (no, not *those* pasties) in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the gumbo
in New Orleans, the enchiladas in Arizona...
