Ezar was a hard man, a very hard man. I don't see him as a bad man. There's a difference.

> I've missed a lot of posts recently, and probably a lot of talk about Ezar, for forgive me if I'm questioning things already discussed - I'm reading backwards. But...
> Personally, I like and admire Ezar, much as I like and admire Piotr.
> Ezar had a terrible and impossible situation on his hands. A backwards planet re-emerging into interplanetary society, with many enemies, few resources, and a lock of money, technology, or education.
> Moreover, he had a Barrayaran secret police that was out of control and undermining his authority; a son who was a dangerous psychopath who could not be controlled; a faction that was using the Prince for their own purposes; Counts whose main concern was their own Country, not his Imperium; and his own health was, quite possibly, failing.
> So he used methods of secrecy and cunning and the few people he could trust to be loyal, to achieve his ends. Yes, many died, but how many more would have died if Serge was allowed to pursue his ambitions as a warlord, or if the whatsetheirnames, political enforcers, were allowed to keep a stranglehold on the population.
> It's like the question of whether it would be a moral choice to murder Hitler before he had a chance to start the killing.
> As a pacifist, personally, I'm with the Dalai Lama on that one; but I can see rational morality in Ezar's choice. I don't think he was a bad man. I certainly don't think he acted out of self-interest. I think he was a good thing for Barrayar.
