There are still some troglodytes (trogdolytes? Never remember which is the
correct term...) in North Africa.... Get below the surface a few feet and
the temperature MAJORLY moderates.

That's a very good list.
My dad was born in 1926 and grew up in Riverside, CA, which is just as
hot and dry as the Central Valley in the summer. No A/C back then!
His parents, who were also born and raised in the area, did appreciate
their A/C when they were older.
