Indeed, as late as the Second World War this attitude persisted.  The U.S.
Army gave its soldiers some "how to survive in Britain" pamphlets, one of
which explained that whereas back home in Yankeeland, men expected women
to exert self-control, in the U.K. women expected men of honor to do the
honorable thing.
