LMB: Speaking of British housing terminology, "council estate" baffles
me. It sounds as if it ought to be something quite glamorous.

As noted, the key word is 'council'
Oh my old man's a dustman
He wears a dustman's hat
He wears cor blimey trousers
And he lives in a council flat
Or do I have to translate dustman as garbage man or sanitary engineer ?
Note that since the Blessed Margeret's "right to buy" even 'social housing'
will have interlaced privately owned homes.
