The Marlborough title went to the Duke's eldest daughter, but as she 
had only daughters, did not go to them, instead to the eldest son of 
the next daughter, Anne, who had married a Spencer.  The Spencer 
surname remains in the title, although as Spencer-Churchill since the 
18th century.
